Berlinale Shorts Programme Nr.3 | Berlinale Meets… | February 2021

Berlinale Shorts section head Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck met with Miranda Pennell, Benjamin de Burca, Barbara Wagner, Dalei Zhang, Gao Yitian, Wang Josy, Edgar Jorge Baralt and Minh Quý Truong, directors of “Strange Object”, “One Hundred Steps”, “Day Is Done”, “Window” and “The Men Who Wait”. Screening in the 2021 Berlinale Shorts programme.

About the films:
Strange Object: A photo album of black-and-white aerial photographs, taken at a time when colonial powers dictated the way things should be interpreted. An exploration of imperial image production and destruction.

One Hundred Steps: Set up both in Ireland and in France, the film is a musical journey through two old bourgeoisie mansions, a bond between past and future.

Day Is Done: A rare visit to grandfather. The sadness of parting is in the air. In Day Is Done, Zhang Dalei picks up where his autobiographically inspired feature debut Summer Is Gone left off.

Window: The stained glass windows of childhood captured in a faded photograph, a light breeze brushing against the skin, a couple at a kitchen table, backlit. Like the comforting feeling of nostalgia for a time yet to come.

The Men Who Wait: Birch trees now grow where workers from near and far once went underground to labour hard for very little money. Now it is a place where men meet to have anonymous sex and share moments of intimacy.
