Berlinale Shorts section head Anna Henckel-Donnersmarck met with Meltse van Coillie, Conrad Veit, Charlotte Maria Kätzl, Livia Huang, Olga Lucovnicova and Yuyan Wang, directors of « Zonder Meer », « Blastogenesis X », « More Happines », « My Uncle Tudor » and « One Thousand and One Attempts to be an Ocean ». Screening in the 2021 Berlinale Shorts programme.
About the films:
Zonder Meer: A campsite in the summer holidays, aimless days spent in the shade of trees. Sunlight is glittering on the lake, but nobody is allowed to swim here. A boy has disappeared and may have drowned. Lucie is trying to understand what is going on around her. How long can you hold your breath?
Blastogenesis X: Looking like a rediscovered film reel from the early days of cinema, this Dadaist nature documentary creates a utopia of equal rights for all life forms.
More Happiness: During a conversation late at night, a woman asks her mother how to be a good person. As they talk, the woman thinks about an old lover. Seasons change and memories accumulate that bring no respite.
My Uncle Tudor: Combining seemingly idyllic images and frank personal questions, the filmmaker embarks on a journey into her own traumatic past to confront the perpetrator and leave her pain behind.
One Thousand and One Attempts to be an Ocean: Images are taken out of context and sounds are broken down into tiny loops in order to turn information into a tidal wave of energy. If you don’t want to drown, be an ocean.
