The opening ceremony of the 71st Berlin International Film Festival Summer Special on June 9, 2021. Hosted by Hadnet Tesfai. With Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek and Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Monika Grütters, and Governing Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller.

Due to the travel restrictions in the ongoing pandemic, availability of international guests was limited. Hygiene regulations such as mandatory masks and testing were in place, however masks could be taken off when guests were seated or in front of a camera.
